Naver Pay for foreigners in 2026: what tourists can and can't do
The rest of Naver Pay is still for people with a Korean phone. The part tourists can use now is checkout inside Naver Map, and it took a passport check to get there.

Quick answer
- The rest of Naver Pay: passport verification doesn't cover it yet as of October 2026. Naver Pay's own identity check still uses a Korean phone in your name or an i-PIN.
- Booking and paying on Naver Map: yes, since June 4, 2026. Verify a Naver account with your passport, then pay with an overseas credit card.
- Some places say no: businesses can switch off overseas cards, which cost them a 3.85% fee.
- In shops: you don't need Naver Pay. Tap or insert your own card, even on a Naver Pay terminal.

You’ve probably seen an N Pay sign at a café counter, or found the restaurant you want on Naver Map with a booking button that asks you to log in and pay. Older answers online say tourists can’t use Naver Pay at all. That was true until June 2026, and it’s still half true now.
The short version
Partly, and the useful part is checkout inside Naver. Since June 4, 2026, you can verify a Naver account with a passport issued outside Korea, with no Korean number. That lets you book, order and pay through Naver Map, with an overseas credit card as the payment method. So if your real question is “can I book that restaurant on Naver”, the answer is now usually yes. If it’s “can I pay with Naver Pay in a shop”, you don’t need to: your own card works at the counter.
The rest of Naver Pay isn’t open to tourists as of October 2026. Its own identity check still uses a Korean phone in your own name or an i-PIN, so features like Naver Pay Money stay out of reach. Naver has said it will add more services to passport verification over time, with no date for Naver Pay.

What tourists can and can’t do with Naver Pay
Naver Pay is two things that share a name. One is a wallet app, like a Korean PayPal with a balance, points and QR codes. The other is the checkout you meet whenever you pay for something inside Naver, including bookings on Naver Map. Visitors can now use the second one: your overseas card gets registered in Naver Pay as the payment method for Naver Map bookings.
| What you want to do | Tourist with a passport-verified Naver account | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Book a table, salon or class on Naver Map and pay | 강추 Worth it Yes | Since June 4, 2026, where the business accepts foreign customers |
| Order ahead through Naver | 강추 Worth it Yes | Same rules as bookings |
| Add an overseas credit card at checkout | 강추 Worth it Yes | Naver hasn’t published which card brands it takes |
| Use the rest of Naver Pay, such as Naver Pay Money | 비추 Skip it Not yet | Still needs a Korean phone or i-PIN |
| Pay at a shop counter | 강추 Worth it Yes, with your own card | You don’t need the Naver Pay app |
| Pay a shop with Alipay through Naver Pay | 케바케 Depends Don’t count on it | Look for the Alipay+ sign; Naver Pay’s Alipay+ link is for Koreans abroad |
The overseas card part isn’t brand new. According to Asia Economy and Electronic Times, Naver let foreign customers pay for Naver Map bookings and orders with an overseas credit card registered in Naver Pay from June 2025, with pages machine-translated into English, Japanese and Simplified Chinese. The catch was the login. To book or pay, Naver requires a real-name account, and Electronic Times reported in June 2026 that Naver Pay and other Naver services verified people with a Korean phone in their own name or an i-PIN. Most tourists stopped there.
How passport verification works
Naver’s own Korean announcement says anyone holding a passport issued outside Korea can verify on a smartphone, without a Korean mobile number and without contacting customer support. It went live on June 4, 2026, and Naver announced it on June 9.
According to Electronic Times, the check confirms the passport is genuine and then matches your face, with a liveness test so a photo of a face won’t pass. Naver says it uses several verification steps for security. It hasn’t published a step-by-step guide in English, and the screens may still be partly in Korean: Naver’s release says wider language support is still being prepared.
In practice:
- Create a Naver account first. You verify later, when a booking or payment asks for it.
- Have the passport in hand and good light for the face check.
- Do it on hotel Wi-Fi or a data plan before the day you need it, not at the restaurant door.
A writer who covers Korean business and travel on note, and who signed up for Naver from Japan in August 2026, advises turning any VPN off while creating the account, because Naver’s anti-fraud checks can block new sign-ups. It’s one writer’s advice rather than a published Naver rule, but it costs nothing to follow.
Naver says it will add more services to passport verification step by step. Electronic Times named Naver Pay, Webtoon and Chzzk as later candidates, with no date.
Paying for a Naver Map booking with a foreign card
Once you’re verified, pick a place on Naver Map, choose a time, and pay at checkout with your overseas credit card. Our Naver Map guide covers setting the app to English and finding places.
The thing that trips people up is on the business side. In Naver SmartPlace, the tool shops use to manage bookings, each business can switch foreign customers’ bookings and orders on or off. The Korea Herald reported in July 2026 that the setting was criticized as a “no foreigners” button. Naver said it really controls whether the business accepts overseas-issued cards, which cost the merchant a 3.85% fee and carry the risk of chargebacks from foreign card issuers. Naver said it was considering renaming it to a “global” booking and order setting.
For you, the effect is the same either way: some places on Naver Map won’t let you book with a foreign card. If that happens, try walking in at opening time, or ask your hotel to phone for you.
In shops, cafés and taxis
You don’t need Naver Pay to pay in person. Your own Visa or Mastercard works at most counters in Korea, as our foreign card guide explains.
Many small businesses now use Npay Connect, Naver Pay’s counter terminal. Financial News reported that more than 100,000 merchants had it by the end of June 2026. The Korea Times describes it as taking card payments, QR codes and contactless (NFC) taps. Seeing the Naver Pay name on the terminal doesn’t mean you need the app: hand over or tap your card as usual.
If you carry Alipay, AlipayHK, Touch ‘n Go, GCash, PayPay or another Asian wallet, it works through Alipay+ merchants. The Korea Times reported in December 2025 that Alipay+ is accepted in more than 70,000 Seoul taxis, among other places. Naver Pay’s own Alipay+ partnership runs the other way, letting Korean Naver Pay users pay abroad. Our Alipay in Korea guide covers where these wallets work.
The UnionPay deal isn’t live yet
You may see headlines from August 2026 about Naver Pay, BC Card and UnionPay working together for foreign visitors. The three signed a memorandum of understanding on August 24, 2026. Money Today and Financial News both report that the service is being developed with a launch aimed at next year, 2027. No product details have been published, and nothing from that deal works today. If you hold a UnionPay card, use it the usual way at counters that take it.
Mistakes that catch visitors out
Treating old answers as current. Many answers online were written before June 2026, when tourists without a Korean phone couldn’t book on Naver at all. Now you can, once your passport is verified.
Expecting the full wallet. Passport verification covers Naver Map booking, ordering and payment, not the rest of Naver Pay. Don’t plan to load money into Naver Pay before your trip.
Verifying at the last minute. The face check needs light, a steady phone and a connection. Do it a day or two before your first booking.
Assuming every business takes you. Some turn off overseas cards. Have a second choice of restaurant, or plan to walk in.
Paying for a Korean number just for Naver. You don’t need one for Naver Map bookings any more. A data-only eSIM is enough for maps and bookings, and our eSIM and phone number guide explains when a number is still worth having.
What we’d do
First trip, a few restaurant bookings in mind: create a Naver account at home, verify your passport as soon as you land, and book through Naver Map with your credit card. Keep a backup restaurant for places that refuse overseas cards.
No bookings planned: skip Naver Pay entirely. Pay in shops, cafés and taxis with your own card and carry a little cash.
You use Alipay or another Asian wallet: keep using it at Alipay+ merchants, and use your card everywhere else.
Staying long enough to want the full wallet: that needs a Korean phone in your own name, and Electronic Times notes that the foreign resident card you need to get a Korean number takes about a month to be issued. For a short trip, get a data eSIM before you fly, using our eSIM and phone number guide, so Naver Map and bookings work from the airport.
Questions people ask
Can foreigners use Naver Pay in Korea?
Partly. Since June 4, 2026 they can verify a Naver account with a passport and pay for Naver Map bookings and orders with an overseas credit card. Naver hasn't extended passport verification to the rest of Naver Pay yet.
Do I need a Korean phone number for Naver Pay?
For Naver Pay in general, yes: its identity check has needed a Korean phone in your own name or an i-PIN. Passport verification replaces that only for Naver Map booking, ordering and payment so far.
Which foreign cards work with Naver Pay?
Naver describes it as overseas-issued credit cards and hasn't published a list of brands. Carry two cards on different networks in case one is refused.
Why does a restaurant on Naver Map not let me book?
Businesses choose whether to take bookings paid with overseas cards, because those carry a 3.85% fee for them. If the button doesn't work, walk in or ask your hotel to call.
Can I use Alipay at shops that show a Naver Pay sign?
Don't count on it. Alipay and other Asian wallets work in Korea through Alipay+ merchants, and Naver Pay's own Alipay+ link is for Koreans paying abroad. Look for the Alipay+ sign instead.
