Is Nami Island worth it? An honest look
A pretty, well-run river island that gets very crowded. Worth it in the right season and mood, skippable if you came for wilderness or a Winter Sonata time capsule.
Worth it for autumn leaves, families and drama fans who go early; skip it if you dislike crowds or want real nature.
Quick answer
- What it costs: 19,000 won for adults, including the round-trip ferry, plus your train or shuttle from Seoul.
- Getting there: ITX-Cheongchun from Yongsan (about 60 minutes) or Cheongnyangni (about 42 minutes) to Gapyeong, then a 20-minute walk or short bus ride to the pier.
- Time needed: a full day from Seoul, with two to four hours on the island itself.
- Best and worst times: autumn is the prettiest and the busiest. Arrive for the first ferries, and avoid weekend middays.

Nami Island turns up on almost every “day trips from Seoul” list, usually with a photo of a long avenue of tall trees in autumn gold and not a single person in it. Then you look at your calendar, see a free day, and wonder whether it’s a lovely escape or a two-hour journey to queue for a ferry with several thousand other people.
It can be either. The island itself is pleasant and well kept. Whether it’s worth your day depends on when you go, what you’re hoping to see, and how much you mind crowds.
The short version
Nami Island is worth it if you’re visiting in autumn or snowy winter, you’re traveling with kids or older relatives who’d enjoy an easy, flat, scenic walk, or you’re a Winter Sonata fan. Go on a weekday and catch an early ferry. It’s less worth it if you want real nature or hiking, hate crowds, or only have three or four days in Korea. In that case one of the alternatives below, or a different day trip, will probably suit you better.
What it actually is
Nami Island (남이섬) is a small island in the Bukhan River. Technically it’s in Chuncheon, Gangwon Province, but you get there from a pier in Gapyeong, Gyeonggi Province, about a five-minute ferry ride away. The company that runs it brands it as the “Naminara Republic,” a playful imaginary country with its own welcome gate.
What you’ll find is a landscaped park: tree-lined avenues (the metasequoia lane is the famous photo spot), riverside paths, cafes and restaurants, and seasonal events. It’s flat and easy to walk. It isn’t wild, and it isn’t meant to be.
Getting there
| Option | Route | Time | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| ITX-Cheongchun train | Yongsan or Cheongnyangni to Gapyeong | About 60 min from Yongsan, about 42 min from Cheongnyangni | Reserved seats; book through Korail |
| Gyeongchun Line | Sangbong to Gapyeong | About 50 min | Pay with T-money; no seat reservation |
| Gapyeong Station to the pier | 1.5 km | About 20 min on foot, or about 5 min by bus 10-4 or taxi | |
| Official shuttle bus | Hongdae 9:00, Myeongdong 9:40, Dongdaemun 9:50 | Arrives about 11:30 | Round trip only, returns 4:30 p.m., booked via the Nami Island site |
The ITX-Cheongchun is the most comfortable, and our guide to booking Korail trains covers how to buy seats as a foreigner. The Gyeongchun Line is slower but just a tap of your transit card. Your Climate Card won’t work out here, since it only covers Seoul, so bring T-money (our transit card guide explains the difference).
The shuttle is the easy choice if you don’t want to think about trains. The trade-off is a fixed day: you arrive around 11:30, when the island is getting busy, and leave at 4:30 p.m. whether or not you’ve had enough. The official site doesn’t publish the shuttle price, so check when you book.
What it costs
Nami Island’s ticket includes the ferry in and out.
| Ticket | Ferry both ways | Motorboat in, ferry out |
|---|---|---|
| Adult | 19,000 won | 29,000 won |
| Middle and high school students, 70 and over | 16,000 won | 26,000 won |
| 36 months to elementary school | 13,000 won | 23,000 won |
Children under 36 months with a guardian go free. The island also sells early-bird tickets (bought and boarded before 8 a.m.) and evening tickets, but the official fee page doesn’t list their current price, so ask at the ticket office. In 2023 the adult ticket was 16,000 won, so it has gone up by 3,000 won since.
There’s also a zipline that crosses the Bukhan River from about 80 meters up. Korea JoongAng Daily put it at 49,900 won in 2023; check the current price if you want to do it.
On top of that comes your train or shuttle, plus lunch on the island. Our piece on what things cost in Korea has meal price benchmarks for Seoul to compare against.
Crowds and the best time to go
Nami Island has long been one of Korea’s most visited sights for foreign tourists. Pressian reported in 2017 that foreign visitors grew from about 170,000 in 2008 to about 1.3 million in 2016, helped by K-drama fans across Asia. The official shuttle alone drops its passengers at about 11:30, so expect late morning to mid-afternoon to be the busiest stretch.
What that means in practice:
- Autumn is peak. The island extends ferry hours from September 18 to November 22, 2026, with the first ferry at 7:30 a.m. daily and the last at 9:30 p.m. on Fridays, weekends and public holidays. That tells you how busy it gets.
- Weekday mornings are the sweet spot. Ferries start at 8:00 a.m. most of the year and run every 30 minutes until 9:00, then every 10 to 20 minutes through the day.
- Evenings are quieter. Ferries run until 9:00 p.m. (9:30 p.m. on extended days), so a late-afternoon arrival works if you’re staying nearby or don’t mind a late train back.
- Summer is the weakest season. It’s green and pleasant, but hot and humid, without the color that makes the famous photos.
The island is open 365 days a year.
The Winter Sonata connection
Winter Sonata aired on KBS2 from January to March 2002 and became a huge hit, especially in Japan, where it’s credited with taking the Korean Wave mainstream. Much of it was filmed on Nami Island, and the island still has statues of the two leads, Bae Yong-joon and Choi Ji-woo.
If you loved the show, standing where those scenes were shot is a real pleasure. If you’ve never seen it, the connection won’t mean much. The island has moved on from being a drama set and is now a general-purpose leisure park. Don’t go expecting a Winter Sonata museum.
Nearby alternatives, honestly compared
Gapyeong and Chuncheon have several other attractions on the same train line. None is a straight replacement; each suits a different traveler.
| Place | What it is | Cost | Better than Nami if… | Worse than Nami if… |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Garden of Morning Calm (아침고요수목원) | Large garden and arboretum in Gapyeong | Adult 11,000 won | You want flowers and quieter paths, or the winter light festival | You’re relying on trains; it isn’t next to a station, so check bus connections |
| Petite France and Italian Village | French and Italian-themed village on Cheongpyeong Lake | Check before you go | You have kids who’ll enjoy marionette shows and photo spots | You want anything natural or authentically Korean |
| Gangchon Rail Park (Gimyujeong rail bike) | Pedal carts on an old railway beside the river | 40,000 won for 2 seats, 56,000 won for 4 | You want an activity rather than a walk | You’re alone; the price is per cart |
Garden of Morning Calm is open from 8:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. (last entry 6:00 p.m.) year-round and runs a light festival in winter evenings; check the dates before you plan around it. It feels more like a garden and less like a theme park than Nami does.
Petite France and the Italian Village were remodeled recently and run marionette performances and music box demonstrations. The official sources we checked didn’t list a current ticket price.
Gangchon Rail Park’s Gimyujeong course starts beside Gimyujeong Station on the Gyeongchun Line. You pedal about 6 km, ride a small train for the last 2.5 km, and take a shuttle back. Departures run from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., with an extra 6:30 p.m. slot on some weekends. It’s fun with friends and poor value alone.

Mistakes that catch visitors out
Arriving at noon on an autumn Saturday. You’ll queue for tickets, queue for the ferry and share the famous tree lane with everyone else. If you can only go on a weekend, take the earliest train you can.
Assuming the Climate Card covers it. It doesn’t. Bring T-money with enough balance for the Gyeongchun Line, or book ITX seats ahead, especially for autumn weekends.
Booking the shuttle without checking the schedule. It’s convenient, but you can’t leave early or stay late. If you want golden-hour photos, take the train.
Trying to do Nami plus three other stops in one day. Nami plus one nearby place is realistic. Nami, the Garden of Morning Calm, Petite France and a rail bike in a single day by public transport is not.
What we’d do
First trip, five days or fewer in Korea: Skip it, unless it’s autumn and you specifically want those leaves. A palace morning and a neighborhood afternoon in Seoul will give you more.
Autumn visitor with a free day: Go on a weekday, take an early ITX-Cheongchun to Gapyeong, walk to the pier and be on the island by about 9 a.m. Leave by early afternoon as the tour groups arrive, and add the Garden of Morning Calm if you still have energy.
Families with young children or older relatives: Nami is a good fit. It’s flat, has plenty of cafes and restaurants, and the ferry ride takes about five minutes. The shuttle bus saves you wrangling train transfers.
Winter Sonata fans: Go, and go in winter if you can. It’s the reason the island became famous, and you’ll enjoy it more than anyone else on the ferry.
Crowd-averse or nature-focused travelers: Choose the Garden of Morning Calm instead, or head for a proper hike. Nami is a pretty park, not an escape.
Questions people ask
How much is the Nami Island ticket in 2026?
19,000 won for adults, which includes the ferry in and out. Middle and high school students and people 70 and over pay 16,000 won, and children from 36 months through elementary school pay 13,000 won.
How long should I spend on Nami Island?
Two to four hours covers the main tree-lined paths and the riverside. With travel from Seoul, plan on a full day, or pair it with a second stop in Gapyeong or Chuncheon.
Can I use the Climate Card to get to Nami Island?
No. The Climate Card only covers Seoul. Use a T-money card on the Gyeongchun Line, or book an ITX-Cheongchun seat through Korail.
Is the Nami Island shuttle bus from Seoul worth it?
It's the simplest option if you don't want to deal with trains. It leaves Hongdae, Myeongdong and Dongdaemun in the morning and gives you about five hours on the island, but it's a fixed schedule with no flexibility.
Was Winter Sonata filmed on Nami Island?
Yes, partly. The 2002 KBS drama was filmed largely on Nami Island and in Seoul, and the island still has statues of the two leads. Expect a few photo spots, not a themed attraction.
