Dermatology clinics in Seoul for foreigners: how to pick one and book in English
Most places foreigners book are cosmetic clinics, not dermatologist-run practices. That can be fine, as long as you know which one you're walking into and what the final bill includes.

Quick answer
- Check the sign: only a clinic run by a dermatology specialist can call itself a 피부과의원 (Dermatology Clinic). "Clinic, specialty: dermatology" (진료과목 피부과) means the doctor isn't one.
- Booking in English: most foreigner-facing clinics take English bookings through their own site, WhatsApp or Creatrip, where the first consultation is free and some clinics ask a small deposit (20,000 won at Medicube Gangnam in October 2026).
- Budget 10% more: cosmetic skin treatments carry 10% VAT, often shown as "VAT 별도", and the tourist refund on it ended on December 31, 2025.
- Insist on the doctor: the Korea Tourism Organization's advice is to pick a clinic where you consult the physician directly, not only a coordinator.
- Dermatologist sign
- 피부과의원
- Not a dermatologist
- 진료과목 피부과
- VAT on cosmetic care
- 10%, no refund in 2026
- Typical Creatrip deposit
- 0 to 20,000 won
You’ve seen the before-and-after reels and the price comparisons, and now you’re looking at a map of Gangnam with a clinic on every second floor. The hard part isn’t finding one that speaks English. It’s telling a dermatologist’s practice from a cosmetic chain, knowing what the deposit buys you, and not being surprised by the bill.
The short version
Most clinics that court foreign visitors take bookings in English, either on their own site or WhatsApp, or through Creatrip, which lists free reservations with a free first consultation. Some ask a small deposit; Medicube Gangnam’s was 20,000 won (about $15) in October 2026, with free cancellation up to 3 days before.
Before you book, read the clinic’s Korean name. Only a clinic run by a dermatology specialist may call itself a 피부과의원. Many popular “skin clinics” are run by general doctors, which isn’t automatically bad for a laser facial, but you should choose it knowingly, and choose a specialist for anything medical (acne scarring, pigmentation, moles).
Then budget for the final number: cosmetic skin care carries 10% VAT, often printed as “VAT 별도” (VAT not included), and the tourist refund on it ended with 2025.
How to tell a dermatologist from a skin clinic
Korea’s Medical Service Act enforcement rules (Article 40, version in force from June 12, 2026) say a clinic’s own name can’t sound like a specialty, and only a clinic whose founder is a specialist may put that specialty in its name. A general doctor can still list dermatology as a field treated, which is where the confusion starts. The Korea Tourism Organization puts the same rule in English: specialist practices are “…Dermatology Clinic”, others are “…Clinic; Specialty: Dermatology”.
| What the sign says | What it means |
|---|---|
| ○○피부과의원 (○○ Dermatology Clinic) | Run by a board-certified dermatologist |
| ○○의원, 진료과목: 피부과 | A general doctor (or another specialty) who also treats skin |
| ○○클리닉 or English-only brand name | Check the Korean registered name on the receipt or website footer |
The gap is large. Money Today, citing National Assembly analysis of national health insurance data, reported in July 2026 that only about 10% of the roughly 30,000 primary care sites that treat skin are run by dermatology specialists, and that 243 of the 285 clinics newly opened by general practitioners in 2025 listed dermatology as a field.
For a hydrating facial or laser toning, a busy cosmetic clinic with good reviews is a reasonable choice. For acne that won’t clear, dark patches, a changing mole or a reaction to an earlier treatment, go to a 피부과의원.
Booking in English: three ways in
| Route | How it works | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| The clinic’s own site or WhatsApp | English coordinator replies, books a consultation slot | Prices often quoted before VAT |
| Creatrip | Free reservation and first consultation; some listings take a deposit; English, Chinese and Japanese chat help for 14 days | Deposit and cancellation terms differ per listing |
| A broker or “medical tour” agent | Matches you to a clinic for a fee | Must be a registered facilitator; unregistered brokers are illegal |
Brokers are where trouble concentrates. Korea JoongAng Daily reported in October 2025 that cases involving illegal brokers rose from 13 in 2020 to 67 in 2024, and that unregistered agents often take steep referral fees. For a skin treatment you don’t need one.
Clinics foreigners book most, compared
These are clinics with large review counts on Creatrip, plus one specialist practice, as listed on October 25, 2026 (Medicube and Seouleaguer figures from their own booking pages). The ratings we saw all sat between 4.7 and 5.0, so the review count and the reviews’ content tell you more than the stars.
| Clinic | Area | Creatrip rating | Reviews | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| OTENA Clinic | Myeongdong | 4.9 | 2,943 | Free reservation |
| Forena Clinic | Hongdae (Hongik Univ. Exit 9) | 4.9 | 2,555 | English staff listed |
| id Clinic Sinsa | Sinsa, Gangnam | 4.8 | 1,737 | Free reservation |
| Beauty Blossom Clinic | Mapo (Hongdae area) | 5.0 | 1,318 | One-on-one consultation with the directors |
| Medicube Clinic Gangnam | Near Sinnonhyeon | 5.0 | 923 | 20,000 won deposit; free cancellation up to 3 days before |
| Seouleaguer Dermatology | Apgujeong (Exit 4, 1 min) | 4.7 | 55 | Says it has two board-certified dermatologists; free booking, pay on site |
Forum threads add a caution. In Tripadvisor’s Seoul forum in 2025 and 2026, one reply warns that free skin analyses are often used to sell treatments and products, and another suggests paying for an analysis to get advice without the pitch (recommendation thread, skin care clinic thread).
If you want a big, foreigner-focused clinic with a lot of reviews behind it, Medicube’s Gangnam branch is the easy pick among the ones taking deposits.
If a dermatologist matters more to you than review volume, Seouleaguer is the one on this list that names board-certified dermatologists on its page.
What it costs, and the 10% at checkout
Prices depend on the device, the dose and the clinic, and most clinics only give a firm number after the consultation. Creatrip’s own planning guide (September 2026) puts a single treatment at about $50 to $150 on a budget, $150 to $400 mid-range and $400 to $1,000 or more at the premium end, and says those aren’t quotes.
Two things change the number:
- VAT: cosmetic skin procedures have been subject to 10% VAT since February 2014, unlike most medical care. Money Today reported in August 2026 that some clinics still advertise prices with a small “VAT 별도” note, so a 100,000-won treatment rings up at 110,000.
- No tourist refund in 2026: Article 107-3 of the Restriction of Special Taxation Act covered only services until December 31, 2025. Two bills to revive it (one to 2027, one to 2029) were still before the National Assembly when Korean press last reported in August 2026, so don’t plan around a refund. Our tax refund guide covers what you can still claim on shopping.

Checks before you agree to a treatment
The Korea Tourism Organization advises making sure you consult the physician directly; otherwise a consultant may pick your treatment without a doctor ever seeing your skin. Before you sign or pay:
- Ask who is doing the procedure, and see the doctor yourself.
- Get the price in writing, with VAT, for the exact device and number of shots.
- Ask what aftercare you need and whether you can fly or sunbathe the next day.
- Leave a couple of days before your flight for anything that causes redness or peeling.
That a clinic is licensed is the floor, not a recommendation. If something goes wrong, our guide to hospitals and pharmacies covers getting seen, and the 1330 Korea Travel Hotline answers in English.
Mistakes that catch visitors out
- Trusting an English brand name: “Dermatology” in English means little. Check the Korean name.
- Saying yes in the chair: a free analysis can turn into a sales pitch. Take the price list and decide later.
- Comparing prices without VAT: one clinic’s quote may include it and another’s may not.
- Booking the day before you fly: redness and peeling from lasers and peels can last a few days.
- Paying a broker: for a skin treatment you can book directly or through a platform for free.
What we’d do
First visit, a facial or laser toning: book a high-review clinic through Creatrip, keep the free consultation free by not buying on the spot, and compare its written quote with one other clinic.
A real skin problem (acne scars, pigmentation, a mole): pick a 피부과의원 run by a dermatologist and ask for the doctor’s consultation in English.
Short on time in Gangnam: book Medicube Gangnam’s consultation on Creatrip with the 20,000-won deposit, and ask for the full price with VAT before you agree to anything.
Questions people ask
How do I know if a Korean skin clinic has a real dermatologist?
Read the Korean name. Korean rules let only a specialist-run clinic put the specialty in its name, as in ○○피부과의원. A sign with a plain name plus 진료과목 피부과 means the doctor isn't a dermatology specialist.
Do Seoul skin clinics speak English?
The ones that court foreign visitors usually do, through an English coordinator or chat, and many list English on Creatrip. Ask whether the doctor's consultation itself is in English or goes through a coordinator.
Can I get a tax refund on skin treatments in Korea in 2026?
No. The VAT refund for foreign tourists on cosmetic procedures applied only to services until December 31, 2025. Bills to bring it back were still before the National Assembly when Korean press last reported, in August 2026.
Is the consultation free?
At many foreigner-facing clinics, yes, and Creatrip advertises free reservations with a free first consultation. A paid, doctor-led consultation can be the better deal if you want advice without a sales pitch.
Do I need to book ahead?
For popular Gangnam, Myeongdong and Hongdae clinics, book a few days ahead. On Creatrip, many listings let you cancel or change free up to 3 days before.
